What are the benefits of being a medical cannabis patient?

Medically endorsed purchases are exempt from both excise and sales tax. Only products that are endorsed as Department of Health Compliant products are eligible for exemption of both excise tax and sales tax. Products that are not Department of Health Compliant are exempt only from sales tax.

How do I become a medical patient?

First, schedule an appointment with your health care practitioner to see if your medical condition qualifies. If it is determined you qualify, your practitioner may provide you with a medical cannabis authorization.

Next, call a medically-endorsed retail cannabis store and schedule an appointment with a medical cannabis consultant (certified consultant) who will register you into the medical cannabis database, issue a medical cannabis card, and collect a fee. Bring your authorization and government/state-issued identification (i.e. driver's license) to the appointment (see WAC 314-55-150 for more info).

Once you have medical cannabis card, you are now officially registered with the program and may take advantage of the card benefits.

Do I qualify for a medical card?

Patients with terminal or debilitating medical conditions may, under their health care practitioner's, benefit from the medical use of cannabis. Terminal or debilitating medical condition means a condition severe enough to significantly interfere with the patient's activities of daily living and ability to function, which can be objectively assessed and evaluated and limited to the following:

Cancer, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), multiple sclerosis, epilepsy or other seizure disorder, or spasticity disorders.
Intractable pain, limited for the purpose of this chapter to mean pain unrelieved by standard medical treatments and medications.
Glaucoma, either acute or chronic, limited for the purpose of this chapter to mean increased intraocular pressure unrelieved by standard treatments and medications.
Crohn's disease with debilitating symptoms unrelieved by standard treatments or medications.
Hepatitis C with debilitating nausea or intractable pain unrelieved by standard treatments or medications.
Diseases, including anorexia, which result in nausea, vomiting, wasting, appetite loss, cramping, seizures, muscle spasms, or spasticity, when these symptoms are unrelieved by standard treatments or medications.
Chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis.
Posttraumatic stress disorder.
Traumatic brain injury.
Humanitarian compassion necessitates that the decision to use cannabis by patients with terminal or debilitating medical conditions is a personal, individual decision, based upon their healthcare practitioner's professional medical judgment and discretion.

How old do I need to be to qualify?

A health care practitioner may authorize the use of cannabis for any patient, regardless of age,as long as it is medically appropriate under the law and the profession’s standard of care per (RCW 69.51A.030).

What are the medical purchase limits?

Where can I purchase as a medical patient?

Washington regulations do not differentiate between “medical” and “recreational” products; however, DOH compliant products have passed more stringent testing standards and may be more beneficial to patients. DOH compliant products fall into three categories (General Use, High-CBD and High-THC) and can be identified by the three special logos found on the packaging (see: A Patient’s Guide to Compliant Cannabis Products).

*Note: Any licensed retail store may sell DOH compliant products; except for High-THC DOH compliant products which may only be sold by a medically-endorsed retail store and may only be purchased by a qualifying patient or designated provider who is registered in the state database.
